Man United legend Robson identifies Erik ten Hag’s priority in transfer window

Bryan Robson has called upon Erik ten Hag to add “more physical players” to the Manchester United squad this summer.

Ten Hag has already got down to work on his rebuild at Old Trafford, having been officially unveiled as manager a fortnight ago. Having appointed Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren as his assistants, the former Ajax boss has begun turning his attentions to shaping his playing squad for next season.

Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata were all confirmed to be leaving the club last week. They follow Nemanja Matic and Edinson Cavani in departing United following what was a dismal 2021/22 campaign, while others could yet still follow them out of the exit door.

Ten Hag’s thoughts though will be turning towards adding to his squad, with the 52-year-old already targeting a couple of his former Ajax protégés. United have already contacted Barcelona over the availability of Frenkie de Jong, while the club are also prioritising Jurrien Timber as a defensive addition.

It could be a busy summer for Ten Hag, with plenty of areas needing addressing in United’s squad. Regardless of who he brings in though, former skipper Robson hopes to see more resilience from the side next season.

“It is going to be an interesting summer. That is for sure,” Robson told World Football Index. “We’ve got a fair few players that are out of contract and leaving the football club this summer so they’ll have to be replaced for starters.

“Erik will then want to start building his own squad. I am interested to see how he sets the team up, who he brings in and how we go next season. I think the club could do with a couple of more physical players this summer to boost the squad.”

Asked whether he was encouraged by Ten Hag getting down to work early, Robson added: “I am, and I think the players will be pleased about that as well. I am sure that he’ll have conversations with them as soon as possible to gauge how this season has gone and why it’s gone that way.

“The players will also want to understand what he is about and what his plans are for the club during his time in charge. I wish him all the best and look forward to watching his Manchester United team next season as I am sure the fans are too.”
