Man staging protest on top of a crane since 5AM – and could be there for ‘weeks’

A man has been staging a protest on top of a crane, police have confirmed. Eyewitness say he is now approaching hour-17 of the protest.

The man ascended the crane in Chapel Street, Salford, at around 5am, according to Greater Manchester Police. Residents say officers have been trying to communicate with the protester all day and are continuing into the evening, including flying drones around the area.

Other emergency services, including Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are also in attendance. One witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “He has been shouting down to police and people saying he’s not coming down and that he can stay up there for at least a week, the work men all got sent home this morning.”

It has not been confirmed exactly what the man is protesting against but the banners appeared to refer to the handling of an alleged racist attack.

Another local added: “He was shouting down to the ground. Police and the fire service were at the scene and the police are still there.”

The force has confirmed the man has been atop the large blue Heyrod crane since 5am. Other witnesses say he has been seen hanging signs from the crane, shown in images of the one-man protest.
