A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a teenage boy died following a stabbing in north Manchester.

Police were called by paramedics who were treating the 15-year-old boy for stab wounds to an address on Bednal Avenue, Miles Platting, on Thursday night.

The boy was taken to hospital but sadly died a short time afterward. His mum, a woman in her 40s, was also treated at the scene for serious stab wounds and was taken to hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

Following the incident detectives launched a murder inquiry. A 44-year-old man from Manchester was arrested in Kent on Friday night on suspicion of murder. He is believed to be known to the victims.

Detective Chief Inspector Alicia Smith, from GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “Last night’s attack has left a community reeling and a family coming to terms with what was an absolutely devastating incident for everyone involved.

“A teenage boy who had his whole life ahead of him has tragically lost his life and not only is his mother grieving at the loss of her son, but she is also recovering from what will have been no doubt, hugely traumatic. Our thoughts remain very much with the family and we are absolutely committed to establishing what exactly happened last night.

“Detectives have been working around the clock since this incident was first reported to us and we’ve now made an arrest which is a huge step forward in getting the family the answers they need.

“Our enquiries are on-going and we would still like to hear from anyone with information, or anyone who may have seen anything. Report it online or via LiveChat at www.gmp.police.uk or alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Residents who live nearby had earlier spoken of their shock. One woman, who has friends who live just outside the cordon, told the M.E.N : “I’ve just woken up to hear the news. It’s heartbreaking to hear, it’s very upsetting.

“We’ve never heard of anything like this happening here before. It’s truly sad.”

Another resident, who lives nearby, said the area is usually ‘very quiet’ and added: “I’m shocked to hear a young boy has died.”
