Malpractice star Niamh Algar has opened up about her experience about filming the ITV medical drama, which left her believing she was actually in a hospital.

The Wonder actress, 30, plays Dr Lucinda Edwards in the gripping thriller, which also stars Sex Education actor James Purefoy and This Is England star Helen Behan.

The five-parter follows Lucinda’s life fall apart after a nightmare shift on an A&E ward during which an opioid overdose victim unexpectedly dies, prompting an investigation into her actions on the fateful night.

Niamh spoke Metro.co.uk and other press ahead of the show’s launch and revealed she felt ‘triggered’ while shooting in a stressful hospital environment.

Speaking about the graphic surgery scenes, the Censor star admitted she felt a ‘buzz’ nailing the ‘choreography and blocking’ of the operations.

‘The sweat was real,’ she added.

The Virtues star explained that the set – which was an old tax office in Leeds – was modelled on real A&E departments and featured different wards.

She continued: ‘I felt like I was in the hospital. And there was a time where I was hooked up to ECG machines and someone said, “Your heart rate is off the charts.’ I was like, “Why is it doing that?’

‘It would really trigger you, like, “Bl**dy hell am I in a hospital?”’

Niamh also said she was intrigued to see how Lucinda will be perceived by Malpractice viewers, saying she felt ‘compelled’ by the character.

She continued: ‘I don’t like playing characters on the basis of trying to be liked. It’s more trying to find something that people will relate to.

‘[I’m] trying to find something that grounds [audiences] in the story.’

Malpractice continues on Sunday at 9pm on ITV and ITVX.
