‘Mahal namin kayo!’: Coldplay to return to PH with eco-friendly spectacle

Coldplay, the iconic pop-rock band known for its melodic piano-driven ballads and rousing stadium anthems, is set to return to the Philippines as part of its ongoing “Music of the Spheres” world tour.

Mounted by Live Nation Philippines, the upcoming concert to be held on Jan. 19, 2024, at Philippine Arena in Bulacan will be the band’s second in the country.

“Mabuhay! To everybody watching… we’re so excited to announce that we’re coming back to play in the Philippines,” lead vocalist Chris Martin said in a video message for the band’s Filipino fans.

Also composed of guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer Will Champion, the British quartet burst onto the global music scene in 2000 with their critically acclaimed and bestselling debut album, “Parachutes.” However, it wasn’t until April 2017 that they finally held court in the Philippines, where they delivered a two-hour spectacle.

Although their next visit is still seven months away, ticket selling starts as early as June 19 for the Live Nation Philippines presale at 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. General selling, meanwhile, is on the following day, June 20 at 12 p.m. Visit www.coldplay.com.

“We hope to see your there,” Jonny said.

“Mahal namin kayo,” Will said.

“Music of the Spheres” is Coldplay’s eighth world tour and marks the band’s return to the live scene after the COVID-19 pandemic. It kicked off last March 2022 in support of the band’s ninth album of the same title, which spawned the hits “Higher Power” and the chart-topping love ode “My Universe,” which features the South Korean pop group BTS.

Reducing carbon footprint

While fans can expect pyrotechnic effects, confetti and other visual eye candy that make Coldplay concerts memorable, the band has also made conscious efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and make their ongoing tour more environmentally friendly than its previous one.

In an update released earlier this month, the band reported that their sustainability initiatives decreased their CO2 emissions—on a show-by-show basis—by up to 47 percent compared to their 2016-’17 tour.

“Now that we’re into the second year of the tour, we have started to run the entire show (audio, lights, lasers, etc.) from an electric battery system that allows us to use 100-percent renewable energy as efficiently as possible,” the band said in a statement. “We have been using electric vehicles and alternative fuels wherever we can, as well as reducing waste and plastic usage to a minimum.”

Moreover, the group, as part of its environmental commitments to help mitigate the climate crisis, pledged to plant one tree for each ticket sold. So far, around 5 million trees have already been planted around the world, according to the latest band update.

‘Work in progress’

Coldplay’s journey toward sustainability is still “a work in progress.” But just the same, the band is thankful for the progress it has made and the support it has received from experts and fans alike.

“Playing live and finding connection with people is ultimately why we exist as a band. We have been planning this tour for years, and we’re super excited to play songs from across our whole time together,” the band said.

“At the same time, we’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we have spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn.” INQ
