Mae Muller had to decide on the spot if she wanted to compete in Eurovision
Mae Muller has revealed she had to decide right away if she wanted to represent the UK at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.
Last week the singer was announced as the UK’s entrant, while her single I Wrote A Song was also unveiled as the track she would be taking to the stage in Liverpool with.
However, when the opportunity first came up, Mae didn’t have much time to think about it at all.
‘It came about just over two months ago when my manager called me and we met up,’ she recalled when appearing on Lorraine on Thursday.
‘I didn’t know what he was going to say, but I had a feeling something big was happening.
‘He asked how I felt about Eurovision and I was like “what do you mean?” and we had a talk about it.’
Mae was then told an answer on whether she was interested in taking up the offer to compete was needed ‘now’.
‘He said, “you are either 100% in, or you’re not” and I was like “I’m in, let’s go”,’ she shared.
She added: ‘Ever since then we’ve slowly been working, working.’
The musician also spoke on the show about being drawn to close the contest.
‘I found out on Twitter and saw my face with a number and thought it was fake but then I saw the verified Eurovision account post it…and now I am very excited,’ she said.
Earlier this week the draw for the United Kingdom and Ukraine’s position in the grand final took place, with last year’s winner set to be the 19th act and Mae bringing everything to an end at 26.
Last week Mae also described how hard it had been to keep the news a secret and that she ‘exploded’ when it was eventually announced.
‘I mean we were literally…I don’t know what… I can’t… I had a blackout. I don’t even remember,’ she said on The One Show.
She described the moment as feeling ‘very good’ and ‘exciting.’
Working with an array of artists throughout her career, including rapper Aitch and DJ Sigala, Mae was also the support act for Little Mix on their 2019 tour.
As a child she appeared in the 2007 music video for Mika’s song Grace Kelly, later going on to release her debut studio album, Chapter 1, in 2019.
Eurovision Song Contest 2023 is coming to the BBC in May.
Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
