Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor’s Tezaab to get a modern remake

Remakes never seem to go out of style. Amidst the influx of remakes, Tezaab has been added to the list of iconic movies set for a modern-day iteration. The 1988 film pretty much put Dhak Dhak girl Madhuri Dixit on the map. Anil Kapoor went on to win the Filmfare award in the Best Actor category for the film. The buzz is that producer Murad Khetani, who recently backed Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 has reportedly acquired the rights for Tezaab.

Tezaab (1988) was directed by N. Chandra. The film also stars Anupam Kher and Chunky Panday. As per reports in The Times of India, Khetani has plans to modernise the film’s story. “We will adapt the story to modern times,” he told the portal. Who will star in the remake? Will the original cast make an appearance? Currently, there’s no confirmation as the producer did not reveal any specific details. He did, however, reveal that the film’s pre-production will begin soon.

Tezaab was released nearly three and a half decades ago. The story of the film follows Mahesh, aka Munna, who is separated from Mohini and put in prison. He then returns to get justice and save Mohini, who is forced to dance at nightclubs for a living. The action-romance film has a cult status and its song Ek Do Teen is still an earworm.

Modern adaptations are often tricky. If remade, the film will surely leave audiences nostalgic for the original and will most likely draw comparisons. Turns out, the film’s director, N. Chandra reportedly doesn’t want a remake to be made. In an earlier interview, he had told TOI that “you cannot replicate the film by putting it into another bottle.”

Meanwhile, Madhuri Dixit is set to star in the upcoming film Maja Maa and will play a homosexual character. Anil Kapoor will next be seen in Jug Jugg Jeeyo alongside Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Neetu Kapoor and more.
