Lupita Nyong’o wears breathtaking breastplate moulded from body at Tony Awards
Over the years, Lupita Nyong’o has conquered the red carpet time and time again, donning ethereal gowns, sparkling numbers and regal ensembles.
At the 2023 Tony Awards on Sunday evening in New York City, the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star delivered yet another show-stopping moment, wearing a silver breastplate cast and moulded from her own body.
In a post shared on Instagram, the 40-year-old paid homage to the fashion designer Misha Japanwala who created the breathtaking piece, which spanned from Lupita’s neck to midway down her torso.
‘Honored, humbled, strengthened and energized to don this breastplate created by @mishajapanwala, which she cast and molded of my body,’ she wrote, sharing photos of herself completing her look with a pair of black trousers, a black blazer and a black clutch.
‘Misha Japanwala is a Pakistani artist and fashion designer, whose work is rooted in the rejection and deconstruction of external shame attached to one’s body. In her artistic process, she creates a realistic and true record of a person’s body as an act of resistance and celebration, and an insistence on being allowed to exist freely in our bodies.’
Lupita quoted the designer, explaining that the word ‘beghairat’, meaning ‘shameless’, had become ‘an anchor in my practice’.
The artist said: ‘Thousands of people have used it to describe me and the work I create, in an effort to insult and shame me into silence.
‘In reclaiming the word and understanding that the rejection of others’ narrow definitions of shame is one of the most powerful tools for liberation, I’ve come to deeply appreciate and respect what living a life of shamelessness truly means.’
Misha emphasised how much emphasis she places on being ‘truthful’ in her work, outlining how she ‘changes nothing about the body and how it looks’ when she creates her breastplates.
‘I think that act of surrendering and allowing our bodies to simply be, is such a beautiful and powerful thing,’ she said.
Lupita continued her caption by thanking Misha for ‘this special opportunity to BE EXACTLY HERE, IN THIS BODY NOW’.
Fans and friends of the actor poured into the comment section to shower her empowering look with adulation.
‘YES DIVINE,’ wrote supermodel Naomi Campbell, while former professional boxer Nicola Adams shared a row of flame emojis.
One individual wrote: ‘What a fabulous celebration of the body. I would love to do this after I finish breast cancer treatment.’
Others also called out negative comments in the post, with a follower sharing: ‘Wow! This piece is powerful, brave and also doing what good art is supposed to do, make people think.
‘Sadly, it’s not surprising how much judgement and negativity this is provoking. They don’t like it when you step out of the comfortable identity they’ve imagined for you.’
