It didn’t take long for Love Island 2023 to get cringe, as two Islanders have actually met before… but only one of them remembers. Yikes.
Ella Thomas and Tyrique Hyde were coupled up in the first episode as the public played Cupid and decided which Islanders would be paired together in a series twist.
However, their initial meeting didn’t go so smoothly because, well, it wasn’t their first meeting.
After sharing a slightly awkward hug and kiss, Ella asked Tyrique: ‘Do you remember we’ve met before?’
It’s safe to say he looked absolutely clueless.
‘When?’, he asked, and you could literally see the cogs turning frantically in his head.
‘Not even that long ago,’ Ella laughed.
‘Where?’, he asked.
‘In London,’ Ella confirmed.
In an attempt to buy himself some thinking time, he replied: ‘We’ll talk in a bit.’
Asked by host Maya Jama whether the public got it right in pairing him with Ella, Tyrique said: ‘I think so, yeah. She looks nice.’
Ella then agreed that she was also ‘feeling’ Tyrique – but didn’t want to reveal too much early doors.
As the new couple started spending more time together, Ella was able to refresh Tyrique’s memory.
‘As soon as I saw you, I recognised you,’ she told him.
‘Do you know what, now that you say that…’, he replied, trying to dig himself out of a hole.
Ella then clarified that she did have blonde hair when their paths first crossed so, in Tyrique’s defence, she does look different now as a brunette.
‘Oh my days! I do remember you!’, he declared. ‘You look mad different now!’
He then gave somewhat of a compliment by telling Ella she looks ‘nicer now’.
‘The thing with Ella is, she had different hair then so I genuinely didn’t recognise her,’ Tyrique said later in the beach hut.
Nevertheless, viewers were living for the cringe.
‘Ella is clearly p***ed that Tarique didn’t remember her and I get it lol’, one viewer tweeted.
Another demanded the juicy goss, given that we actually are yet to find out how the pair know each other.
‘we didn’t get enough tea on tyrique and ella, like what’s the history did you guys knack or just mutuals’, a viewer tweeted.
‘Tyrique lied through his teeth. He doesn’t remember Ella at all but she wasn’t going to let it go’, another wrote, not believing that Tyrique actually did realise who Ella was.
Another joked: ‘Tyrique trying so hard to remember Ella and it’s not coming to him’.
‘The way Tyrique just lied, that boy doesn’t remember Ella lol’, another laughed.
Let’s hope the tea is spilled in episodes to come…
