Lord Hodge at the Guildhall by Anwen Pinniger City of London Freemens School
Going to a City of London School presents many opportunities for intellectual growth, but by far my favourite part is the times when we are taken up to visit the ancient City. The corporation that runs the school also runs the City of London, the country and indeed the world’s premier financial markets for the last thousand years.
Myself and my close friend and classmate, Olive Jenkins, along with three Upper Sixth and a teacher, journeyed up to the Guildhall on the 4th of October, to listen to Lord Patrick Hodge, who is a judicial lord, since he is the current Deputy President of the UK Supreme Court. The lecture concerned the history of commercial law, and how over millennia London law has shaped the world. The audience members were of such high calibre too; representatives from Legal UK, lawyers from across the country, and law students were all asking questions after. We also got to network and mingle afterwards, with canapes and drinks, which was very daunting, but actually not that scary after a while.
Undeniably a highlight for me and Olive was meeting the Chief Commoner, Simon Duckworth, who showed us the private parlour in which Lord Hodge would later be dining with the Lord Mayor, The Rt Hon Vincent Keaveny, and other representatives from the corporation.
This trip was invaluable. As someone who is considering law as a profession, meeting so many current lawyers who were so eager to offer guidance and advice was so reassuring and calmed my nerves about the whole process of becoming a lawyer. Meeting such an important person was an incredible moment; we’d never met a Lord before! I think the main point is that this opportunity was simply one we thought would be fun; let this serve as a reminder to seize every opportunity with both hands. If it sounds like it could be fun, go for it!
