Lonely Planet names top destinations for travel in 2023
If you’re looking for some destination inspiration for trips in 2023, Lonely Planet has just unveiled its annual list for the year ahead.
But this year the team has pulled together their top-rated spots for different categories: eat, journey, unwind, connect and learn – all depending on how you like to travel.
For each of these different areas, Lonely Planet has named six destinations.
‘We hope this year’s roster helps you navigate the world in the way that’s most meaningful to you – through recommendations from the local voices who know these places best,’ the team explains on the website.
In terms of culinary delights, Lima in Peru leads this category, with the capital always performing well on the annual World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
While the Umbria region of Italy and the Japanese city of Fukuoka follow close behind.
For the journey category, the Istanbul to Sofia night train made the list, as well as Bhutan, Zambia, Western Australia, Nova Scotia and Parque Nacional Naturales in Colombia.
If unwinding is top of your holiday priority list, destinations like (perhaps unsurprisingly) Jamaica and Dominica are the top picks, alongside Raja Ampat, Malta, Halkidiki and Jordan.
For connecting with others, Lonely Planet named Alaska, Albania, Accra in Ghana, Sydney, Guyana and Boise in the USA as the top spots.
Whereas if you’re hoping to visit somewhere to deepen your cultural and historical knowledge, Manchester is one of the best places to visit.
It features on the list alongside New Mexico, Dresden in Germany, El Salvador, Scotland and Marseille in France.
