‘Lonely and scared’: Viral clip exposes how dogs are treated on planes
This is what a dog’s-eye view of flying on a commercial airplane looks like.
A Vancouver International Airport worker has gone viral for showing terrified pet parents what their precious furballs experience alongside the luggage.
“Can you show us where you put dog cages…please I am planning to [bring] my dog with me but I am very scared,” a follower of user @Deeej asked the airline industry employee, who is known for using his account to answer questions about the internal dealings of the airport.
In reply, Deeej shared a video of a small dog in a cage strapped to the floor in a corner of the plane otherwise filled with luggage. A fabric shield covers the area, so the dog only has visibility out the side windows of the crate.
The video — which has been viewed over seven million times — has generated a flurry of feedback, with commenters torn between whether the situation is inhumane or not.
“I could never do this to my dog. I’d be crying and throwing up the entire plane ride knowing how lonely and scared he is,” reads the top-voted comment.
“I’d put one of my siblings under there before I put my dog,” reads the second most popular.
Other industry insiders, however, reassure viewers that staffers do try their best to make sure animals have a smooth flight.
“Not y’all trying to cancel this,” reads the third most upvoted post, “as a ramp agent myself we love your pets and always make sure they’re okay and safe.”
“Yes to that,” Deeej captioned a follow-up video showing an assortment of dogs in crates.
While the experience of flying is a visibly stressful one for most of the dogs pictured, there are some ways to make it a more pleasant experience.
“If you ever fly with your dog again make sure you put blankets around their cages so they can stay warm,” Deeej suggests in another pet plane-focused clip.
