Loki and Silver Surfer Skipped Secret Wars Through Marvel’s OTHER Void

2015’s Secret Wars was an expansive event, quite literally reaching every corner of the Marvel multiverse. With the collapse of the multiverse, it was nearly impossible to escape this seminal Marvel event. Be that as it may, both Loki and the Silver Surfer managed to avoid Secret Wars by escaping the multiverse entirely.

Loki and the Silver Surfer both escaped into a void called the Land of Couldn’t-Be Shouldn’t-Be. This empty realm first appeared in 2014’s Silver Surfer #3, by Dan Slott and Michael Allred. The Land of Couldn’t-Be Shouldn’t-Be is a place that exists outside of Eternity, separated from the Marvel multiverse.

This realm exists as a blank void, a place where anything could happen and all possibilities are one. Due to the nature of the Land of Couldn’t-Be Shouldn’t-Be, when the multiverse collapsed, this empty realm came to be of great use. Indeed, the Land of Couldn’t-Be Shouldn’t-Be became a safe haven for a select few who managed to escape the multiverse’s collapse and Doctor Doom’s subsequent creation of a new Battleworld.

Silver Surfer and Dawn Greenwood in the Land of Couldn't Be Shouldn't-Be During Secret Wars

In Silver Surfer #13-15, also by Slott and Allred, the Silver Surfer and his companion, Dawn Greenwood, made their way out of the multiverse. When the multiverse collapsed, Norrin Radd and Dawn Greenwood were shown a tear in the fabric of reality by their future counterparts, exiting Eternity and entering the Land of Couldn’t-Be Shouldn’t-Be. There, they encountered Glorian, the Maker of Miracles, and his master, the Shaper of Worlds.

Realizing that Doom had corrupted Eternity, Dawn and the Silver Surfer decided to recreate the original multiverse. This way, when the heroes of Battleworld eventually defeated Doom, they’d have a multiverse to which they could return. However, in the process of recreating the multiverse, Norrin and Dawn ran into several problems. For one thing, they were working entirely from memory, leaving gaps in the worlds that they had made.

Dawn also created another Norrin Radd by mistake, and that Silver Surfer was corrupted by his own desires, destroying Galactus. Eventually, the duo realized that this was all a ploy for Glorian to gain power and kill the Shaper of Worlds. Inevitably, the Silver Surfer and Dawn realized that they couldn’t live in this fantasy anymore, as it was based on their own desires rather than reality. As soon as Eternity was restored, Norrin and Dawn returned to their original multiverse, destroying the new one that they’d created.

Dawn and the Surfer weren’t the only ones to escape into the Land of Couldn’t-Be Shouldn’t-Be. In 2015’s Loki: Agent of Asgard #16-17, by Al Ewing and Lee Garbett, Loki and his friend, Verity Willis, a lie-detecting ghost, made their way out of the multiverse as well. This escape came after a battle with Loki’s future counterpart, King Loki, who made plans to destroy Earth and the Asgardians during the multiversal collapse.

Loki, God of Stories Confronting Those Who Sit Above in Shadow in the Land of Couldn't-Be Shouldn't-Be

Both King Loki and Loki avoided the final incursion, escaping the multiversal collapse into the Land of Couldn’t-Be Shouldn’t-Be. As the God of Stories, Loki also saved the essence of the Asgardians and their enemies from the destruction of the multiverse, preserving his people.

As soon as he entered the Land of Couldn’t-Be Shouldn’t-Be, however, Loki was confronted by Those Who Sit Above in Shadow, the gods of the gods. Those Who Sit Above in Shadow wanted the essence of the Asgardians, in order to feed off of them.

Loki outsmarted the gods of the gods, questioning their very existence. Loki asked Those Who Sit Above in Shadow if they created the gods, or if the gods created them, scaring these beings away. Loki also met with King Loki, and the two made peace with each other. At the end of this adventure, Loki jumped forward in time, to a point after the multiverse was restored.

Overall, Secret Wars reached across the multiverse, but that doesn’t mean that it was inescapable. Characters like Loki and the Silver Surfer demonstrated how to escape multiversal collapse, in one of the most creative ways possible. It’s interesting to see that reality exists beyond even the multiverse in the greater Marvel Universe.
