Liverpool told Klopp target will be a hit despite not being ‘sexiest of names’
Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has assured Jurgen Klopp that top target Alexis Mac Allister will be a sure-fire success at Anfield despite not being the ‘sexiest of names’. Liverpool are reportedly the frontrunners to sign Mac-Allister from Brighton in the summer.
The 24-year-old has been tearing it up in the blue and white this season and reports from his native Argentina suggest that a deal has been agreed for Mac Allister to join the Reds this summer for £60million.
There had been concerns that Mac Allister wouldn’t be on his way to Liverpool after the Athletic claimed the midfielder was only interested in leaving the Seagulls for Champions League football but it appears that isn’t the case. Despite Liverpool missing out on the final English qualification spot it is thought that Mac Allister is keen on the move.
And Johnson thinks he is the perfect fit for what Liverpool are looking for in his position. Speaking to Lord Ping, he said: “I can see him coming in and playing a bit like Diogo Jota in the sense he is really clued up about the league, understands about the pace and physicality and hopefully that will make it really easy for him to get to grips with the way Liverpool play.
“He has an amazing ability to know where everyone is on the pitch. I’m not ashamed to say I didn’t know too much about him 18 months ago, but he has since put in some unbelievable performances for Argentina, won the World Cup and I think he is now just a way above the standard of his Brighton team-mates.
”When he plays alongside players like he will at Liverpool, he will really perform. I’m a really big fan of his, even though he may not be the sexiest of names Liverpool have been linked with. However, just like Jota, they will know exactly what they are getting from him. He will enjoy playing at Anfield, he will improve the team and they can take him to another level.”
Liverpool are in desperate need of reinforcements in the centre of the park with most of their players being either too young or too old to lead the former champions back to Premier League glory. The absence of Thiago Alcantara has been felt this season while Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are beginning to show signs of slowing down.
Liverpool are hoping to bring in at least two players in central midfield with Joao Palhinha, Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher and Moises Caicedo also linked with a move to Anfield.
