Liverpool should be wary of £30m winger despite Jurgen Klopp’s ‘unplayable’ assessment

Adama Traore is a player who is constantly cropping up in reports about Liverpool and transfer links have surfaced again this summer. Traore is an eye-catching player with an unbelievable turn of pace and an unrivalled physicality, but there are plenty of reasons the Reds should exercise caution with the Wolves winger.

The attraction with Traore is obvious. You only have to watch a few minutes of him to realise he offers something completely different to other Premier League wingers.

“Adama is unique, I repeat, when I say unique I say unique all over football. There is no player like Adama,” former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo after their 1-0 defeat by Liverpool on March 15.

He’s right, too. Traore’s ridiculous straight-line speed and upper-body strength makes him extremely difficult to stop.

Wolves know it too – that’s why they took the unusual decision of applying oil to his arms, so defenders can’t get a hold of him.

He ended the campaign with two goals and two assists in 37 Premier League outings – still a meagre output for a player so talented.

Traore is not at the start of his career anymore. When he was making his way in England at Aston Villa and Middlesbrough, after an upbringing with Barcelona, his erratic and inconsistent performances were understandable.

Now they are evidence of a player not performing consistently at the level expected of him. That is why Liverpool should exercise caution in the transfer market.

The Daily Star says the Reds are considering a £30m bid for the Wolves winger who has two years left on his contract at Molineux.

The report states that Wolves placed a £60m price tag on Traore when Liverpool first showed an interest in the rapid wideman 18 months ago.

That reduction in price does not represent a bargain – it merely reflects his reduction in value due to his inconsistent performances and contract status.

Traore will not be another Diogo Jota if Liverpool shelled out £30 for him this summer. Jota hit the ground running and has provided a brilliant option for Klopp after his £45m arrival last year – but his solid performances with Wolves offered an indication he would do just that at a new club.

Traore, unfortunately, does not appear to be on an upwards trajectory. He will continue to terrorise full-backs and add clips to his highlights packages, but his end product is still sorely lacking.
