LIVE: Why you won’t see Novak in the United Cup
Many a song and dance has been made about Novak Djokovic’s return to Australia 12 months since he was deported over his refusal to receive a COVID-19 vaccination.
Many a song and dance has also been made about the inaugural United Cup, being held in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth from today.
So with the incredible pulling power of the 35-year-old nine-time Australian Open winner, why then is he not leading what would no doubt be a powerhouse Serbian side?
The answer is bureaucracy.
Entries were taken for the United Cup in October, when The Joker was still barred from Australia. Unsurprisingly, it meant officials could not offer him a spot.
Speaking on TODAY on Thursday morning, Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley said while it was unfortunate Djokovic wasn’t playing in the United Cup, he was thrilled he was back in the country.
When asked if he was concerned Djokovic would be booed wherever he plays, Tiley said he had “a great deal of confidence” in the Australian sporting community.
“They appreciate when they’re watching a nine-time champion, a great player,” he said.
“(Djokovic) is coming off 2022 arguably having the best end of the season of any male player. (He) is going to be difficult to beat.
“I am relying on that confidence and whatever happens, happens. I think there is going to be a great appreciation for the fact Novak is back and playing the kind of tennis he is playing.”
Djokovic will instead line up in the Adelaide International next week ahead of the Open.
