LIVE: Ponga denies suggestion over No.1 switch
Newcastle great Andrew Johns is a fan of Kalyn Ponga moving back to fullback, but feels sorry for the player pushed out of the side.
Ponga will wear the No.1 jumper in today’s clash against Manly, having played in the halves every other game this season.
But concussion issues continue to play the superstar who was dumped from Queensland’s State of Origin team this week.
His move back to the custodian role, though, leaves club recruit Lachie Miller on the bench today.
Miller has played every game at fullback this season to date, and has been one of the club’s better players.
“Lachie Miller has been one of the best all year but he’s hit the wall a little bit,” Johns told Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.
“How they use Miller off the bench I don’t know. I feel really sorry for him.
“Kalyn goes back there, I don’t know whether it was to protect him from defending in the front line, but fullback is his spot.”
Johns wants the Knights – who sit 13th on the ladder with four wins and a draw this season – to put a score on the Sea Eagles.
“They need to make a statement,” Johns said.
“Sunday afternoon at Newcastle against a depleted Manly team, without all the Trbojevics and Daly Cherry-Evans, they need to make a huge statement.”
