LIVE: NRL star’s Origin hopes slim after horror injury
Penrith Panthers physio Pete Green has revealed to the Sydney Morning Herald how an “innocuous” incident has led to forward Spencer Leniu being ruled out for an indefinite period after suffering a ruptured testicule.
Leniu collided with Panthers giant Eddie Blacker during an opposed session on Wednesday night and medical staff may need to source a UFC-style protective cup to help him return to the field.
The Samoan representative was rushed to hospital after the incident for surgery and won’t play against the Roosters.
Green detailed the incident with Blacker and gave an insight into the toughness of Leniu.
“It was such an innocuous tackle, he was making a front-on tackle and copped an accidental from the biggest man in our squad [Blacker],” he told the SMH.
“Nobody knew he did it. He didn’t even get up ginger, he continued to train and kept it to himself.
“He normally does extras with the middles at the end of training, but he didn’t, and that was the first sign something was wrong.
“It wasn’t until he showered up we knew he was in trouble.
“Depending on the size of the rupture, some will bleed straight away and within ten minutes the testis can be three times the size. Others you wouldn’t know you had until the next day.
“It is a medical emergency if you don’t catch it. We’re lucky his symptoms came about quickly while we were still at training.”
