Lip oil nails add a barely-there wash of colour to your summer manicure
There’s nothing like a slick of lip oil to finish off your makeup and give you that coveted ‘clean girl’ look.
And you can now match your mani to the aesthetic too, thanks to a new trend dubbed ‘lip oil nails.’
Like the cult-favourite beauty product, lip oil nails are sheer with a slightly pinkish tint that’s understated and healthy-looking.
While nail art is still popular, the hottest styles of the moment lean more towards minimalism – from the ‘glazed doughnut’ effect to the micro-manicure.
Lip oil nails follow the gloss-inspired shades that were all over our social media feeds at the start of 2023, offering a more pared-back (and less glittery) way to rock translucent talons.
Given the hashtag #LipOil has 1billion views on TikTok – and brands like Rare Beauty and Dior can’t restock quick enough to keep up with demand – we reckon it’s only a matter of time before the craze hits nail salons.
Liana Thomson, nail expert at Nails.co.uk, explains: ‘The aim of a lip oil manicure is to get the same shine and glossiness that you get from a lip oil but on the nails.’
To get the look at home, she recommends starting with a thorough prep, which involves buffing and filing nails and trimming cuticles.
Next, it’s time to pick a polish.
‘Choose your base colour carefully,’ says Liana.
‘If you have a translucent/sheer nail varnish for this base coat then opt for this. If you do not have a sheer varnish and you want to keep costs low and avoid buying new products, apply a thin coat of your standard opaque varnish so you can still see through your nail slightly.’

While there needs to be some colour to your base coat, the effect you’re going for is semi-transparent and natural – no matte allowed.
‘You want to be able to see through the nails ever so slightly, as you can in a lip oil to your natural lip colour,’ adds Liana.
She advises opting for neutral, pink, or red shades to match your lip colour, and finishing off ‘with one or two layers of an ultra-glossy topcoat.’
Shine is an important part of this look and a quality topcoat will help you get longer out of your manicure, so don’t skimp or cut corners during this step.
Since the finished product is low-maintenance and won’t clash with what’s in your wardrobe, it’s worth the effort.
Or, if you don’t think you can manage it on your own, why not bring your favourite lip oil down to the salon as inspiration and see what your nail tech can create?
