Lions’ emphatic stand for under-fire coach
WARNING: This story contains intergenerational trauma for indigenous people and pregnancy loss
Brisbane chairperson Andrew Wellington says the club will stand by coach Chris Fagan as he commits himself to the AFL’s investigation into the allegations of First Nations players at Hawthorn.
It comes after the ABC published a report on Wednesday containing graphic examples of alleged mistreatment of First Nations players at the Hawks.

It alleges young First Nations players were separated from their partners, and that one couple was pressured to terminate a pregnancy in order to help the player’s career.
Incoming Kangaroos coach Alastair Clarkson was one of three former Hawks staffers named in the report, along with Fagan, who was an assistant under Clarkson, and ex-Hawks player development manager Jason Burt.
In a statement on Sunday, Wellington said the club would “strongly support” Fagan through the AFL’s investigative process as he categorically denies playing a part in any wrongdoing.
“We stand by Chris as he commits himself to be part of the AFL investigation, which gives him procedural fairness, into allegations concerning historical events at the Hawthorn Football Club, where he was a former employee,” Wellington said.
“Chris has categorically denied any wrongdoing. It has been a distressing and difficult week for Chris, his wife Ursula and their family, as it has for many, and we strongly support his right to a fair, impartial and independent investigative process.”
Wellington personally endorsed Fagan’s shining character, claiming the 61-year-old has always promoted player and staff wellbeing, while warranting a culturally safe environment at the Lions.
“Since Chris Fagan arrived at the Brisbane Lions in October 2016, he has been more than just our head coach. He has been a role model, a mentor and a father figure.
“He has played a key role in steering our club into the strong position it’s in today; integral to our success on and off the field.
“In all of my dealings with Chris over the past six years, he has always made the welfare of our players and staff an utmost priority.
“Chris has been a great supporter of all of our players and their families and has worked hard to ensure our club provides a culturally safe environment for everyone.”
