Lin-Manuel Miranda’s former Hamilton co-star addresses ‘funny’ reunion talk

Daveed Diggs, 41, catapulted to fame with his iconic role in the hit musical Hamilton alongside the show’s lead star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, 43.

Now, seven years after he originated the roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the play, Daveed is under Lin-Manuel’s musical direction once again in The Little Mermaid.

However, the actor insists this is not the “reunion” fans may think it is.

He told Express.co.uk as he walked the blue carpet at the London premiere: “It’s always funny to me when people say we’re reuniting because we’re in communication all the time.

“It just feels like the text thread is continuing.”

The Hamilton star has done a range of series and films since his time on Broadway, and this film does offer a reunion for the actor, albeit not with Lin.

In the 2017 family drama Wonder, Daveed starred as the teacher of the lead character Auggie, played by Jacob Tremblay.

Jacob was later announced as the voice of Flounder, joining Daveed and Awkwafina as Ariel’s three iconic companions in The Little Mermaid.

The 16-year-old gushed: “Daveed’s a wonderful guy and he’s just a great dude to be around.”

Casting and production on the big-budget film started as early as 2019 for some stars, leaving them to keep the film’s secrets for four long years.

Jacob himself noted that walking the red carpet with Daveed earlier this month was more of a reunion than acting together because of the drawn-out timeline, which included a brief pause during Covid.

He revealed: “It feels like the distance between Wonder and filming this was so short compared to filming this and it coming out.”

The actor was cast in the lengthy production when he was just 13 and admits he was “lucky” to record most of his voice work early before “deep-voice puberty” hit.

Although, this made re-records a bit trickier to shoot, forcing the actor to up his pitch and mimic his facial expressions from years earlier.

He explained: “They actually have a camera, when you’re recording your lines they had it recording your facial expressions so then they take your facial expressions and implement into the animated product.”
