Lidl named cheapest supermarket – 10% cheaper than Tesco even with Clubcard
Britons can make savings on their groceries
With a range of supermarkets available, it is often hard to keep up with which one has the best deals and where people can get more from their money and make savings, however, new research has revealed the cheapest supermarket.
Lidl has officially been named the cheapest supermarket in the UK, beating all major retailers, including Aldi, in the latest price comparison survey.
The analysis, conducted by The Grocer, found a basket of everyday items at Lidl cost just £50.30, making it cheaper than competitors even with their discount schemes applied.
Lidl’s everyday grocery items clocked in more than 10 percent cheaper than Tesco, and £19.88 cheaper than the most expensive retailer, Waitrose.
Data from the Grocer’s ‘Super Grocer 33’ compares the price of 33 everyday grocery items across the UK’s seven major supermarkets.
Britons can use loyalty cards to get money off their shopping
This win comes as Lidl’s fourth accolade, out of five surveys since the Grocer 33’s inception.
The survey also found Lidl came out cheapest even after other supermarkets’ discount schemes were applied.
Overall, the discounter was found to be ten percent (£6.14) cheaper than Tesco – and still £5.10 cheaper after Clubcard discounts were applied.
Similarly, the same products at Sainsbury’s cost £6.77 more, with no benefit from the supermarket’s Nectar Prices.
Ryan McDonnell, Chief Executive Officer at Lidl GB told Express.co.uk: “Every week, independent analysis shows we are consistently the UK’s cheapest supermarket. As a result, we are seeing more customers coming through our doors and switching their weekly shop to Lidl from the traditional supermarkets.
“We know people switch to us to make savings, but then stay with us when they realise that they’re not having to compromise on quality.”
As the cost of living crisis continues, any extra cash could be vital for families on low incomes
Loyalty schemes are no longer just about points – they can also unlock big discounts and other exclusive rewards.
Even with Lidl crowned as the cheapest supermarket, people can make huge savings with other retailer discount cards and reward schemes.
Morrisons More
Morrisons announced in May 2023 that it was scrapping the newer scheme and returning to Morrisons More, which is now available as a card and via an app.
With Morrisons More, customers can earn points on selected products in stores and online, including fuel. Once someone has earned 5,000 points, they receive a ‘Morrisons Fiver’, which can be redeemed on a future shop, either in-store or online.
Rachel Eyre, chief customer and marketing officer at Morrisons told Express.co.uk: “The new More Card – which replaces the My Morrisons scheme – will enable customers to earn points on selected purchases, including fuel, and redeem those points for fivers off their shopping.
“The card will also give customers access to exclusive More Card prices with market-leading discounts on customers’ favourites.”
Iceland Bonus
Iceland Bonus cardholders earn rewards by effectively paying for their shopping in advance. For every £20 saved onto an Iceland Bonus Card, Iceland adds £1.
Iceland’s scheme means that shoppers get rewarded before they shop. It gives people £1 extra if they top up £40, they get £2 extra and so on, which overall equates to five percent of a reward.
Sainsbury’s Nectar card
With Nectar Prices, Sainsbury’s will offer lower prices for every loyalty customer and extra personalised prices through their Nectar Prices.
People can use their Nectar points to get money off their Sainsbury’s shopping, and with over 350 leading retailers including eBay, Esso and Argos. Customers earn one Nectar point for every £1 spent at Sainsbury’s.
Simon Roberts, CEO at Sainsbury’s, said: “We will keep refreshing Nectar Prices and increasing the variety of products on offer. It gets better, Nectar customers who shop in-store with SmartShop will receive extra personalised value with Your Nectar Prices, bringing them the best prices on their favourite products.
“Our customers really are at the heart of every decision we make and we hope they find that Nectar Prices is an exciting way to bring them consistently great value all year round.”
Co-op Membership
The Co-operative membership also offers customers the chance to earn money back on their purchases and get member-exclusive prices which the retailer said could save customers £300 a year.
Their loyalty programme gives people 2p for every £1 they spend on selected Co-op products and services which goes into their Co-op Membership account.
Asda Rewards
Asda Rewards is run through a smartphone app and allows customers to collect ‘Asda Pounds’ by buying certain products or completing missions. These can then be spent at Asda in-store or online.
Tesco Clubcard
Tesco Clubcard members collect one point for every £1 they spend in-store and online, and one point for every two litres of fuel they buy. Tesco also offers members Clubcard Prices, which are lower than the standard prices, across a range of products. Each Clubcard point is worth 1p in Tesco, so 150 points would be worth £1.50 to put towards your shopping.
However, Tesco will reduce the value of Clubcard points spent with its reward partners on June 14, 2023, from three times their usual value to twice their regular value.
