Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu draws Stephen Curry reaction after historic WNBA 3-point contest

Sabrina Ionescu broke the WNBA and NBA 3-point contest records with her final round Friday, and it even drew a reaction from one of the NBA’s best shooters.

“RIDICULOUS,” Curry tweeted Friday night, typing his reaction above a video of Ionescu’s final round where the Liberty star scored 37 out of a possible 40 points.

Then, a few hours later, Ionescu tagged Curry in a separate tweet, asking the Warriors’ star — and co-holder of the NBA 3-point contest’s record (31) alongside Tyrese Haliburton — for a “shoot out ??” and adding a laughing emoji.

In addition to shattering the NBA record set by Curry and Haliburton, Ionescu also surpassed the WNBA mark set by Chicago Sky Allie Quigley, who hit 30 last year and wrote on Twitter afterward that Ionescu’s record “won’t ever be broken.”

Ionescu made 20 consecutive shots at one point during her round until she missed her final shot from the right wing — the second-to-last station before Ionescu reached the corner, where she connected on another five shots and roared after the final one.

“I was just focused on making one at a time,” Ionescu said following the 3-point contest. “I wasn’t sure how many I missed, but I knew it wasn’t a lot, so I’m happy to have won this and thankful for the crowd. They were cheering me on the entire time.”

The 3-point competition was part of the WNBA’s All-Star weekend, which continues with the All-Star Game on Saturday, when Ionescu and guard Courtney Vandersloot will join Breanna Stewart on Team Stewart.

Through her first 16 games with the Liberty in 2023, Ionescu has connected on 44.6 percent of her 3-pointers while attempting a career-most 7.6 per game and making a career-high 3.4.

The Liberty, which sit in first place in the Eastern Conference and have the WNBA’s second-best record behind the Las Vegas Aces, don’t play again until hosting the Dallas Wings following the All-Star break on July 19.
