Liberty Ross opens up on ‘brutal’ divorce from Rupert Sanders
Liberty Ross has described her highly-publicised divorce from filmmaker Rupert Sanders as ‘brutal’ as his affair with actress Kristen Stewart was exposed.
In 2012, photos emerged of Rupert kissing Twilight actress Kristen, who he was directing in Snow White and The Huntsman.
He was married to Liberty at the time, who was also starring in the film playing Kristen’s on-screen mother, and they shared two children.
Liberty, 43, has barely spoken about the devastating affair publicly, but has now reflected on that difficult period in her life in a new interview.
Speaking to The Times, the model and actress said: ‘We try to keep things as smooth and positive as possible for our children. It was tough, obviously, getting divorced.
‘It was brutal. But at the same time I don’t see it as a failure. I see it as evolving. If two people can’t evolve together, then it’s better that they live apart. You can still have a family — it’s just not under one roof.’
When asked how she managed to maintain a dignified silence amid her marriage being thrown under the spotlight, Liberty responded: ‘Um, gosh. You do what you do for your kids. That’s all that matters. You always put the kids first. I was with Rupert from when I was 18, so I was very young.’
Liberty and Rupert, 50, are now on good terms with each other as they amicably co-parent their children Skyla, 17, and Tennyson, known as Sonny, 15.
The former spouses are now even neighbours in Los Angeles.
‘He’s a big part of my life and always will be. He gave me the two greatest gifts of my life and that’s all I could ever want,’ Liberty – who married Rupert in Cornwall when she was 24 – admitted.
‘I did not f**k him. This is like the most candid interview. No, I didn’t f**k him,’ she told Howard Stern at the time.
The actress added: ‘Well, who’s going to believe me? It doesn’t even matter. It looked like… You know, you make out with a dude in public, it definitely looks like you did.’
