Leyton’s finest cafe : Bread and Oregano by Zaima Fattah, Eastlea Community School

Whether the bustling of London stops or not, Leyton’s finest cafe, Bread and Oregano enlightens the air with the sweet smell of coffee and fresh bakeries.

During the first lockdown, founders Kate Prior and Ugo Galleli moved to Leyton to open up the first Greek cafe in the area. They opened the cafe, in hope of bringing the flavours of Greece to London, as they had realised it had not been done before and the aspiration to share their favourite childhood dishes. The food offered ranges from traditional specialties such as Bougasta, a creamy pastry desert, to piping hot wraps stuffed with caramelized onions.

For the few years its been running, it is the hub of entertainment which brings in all areas of community, such as families, friends and workers. These people, with beaming smiles, bring their loved ones in with them, to share their delightful experience.

From the vibrant blue in the architecture to the soothing ambience, the positive atmosphere is also reflected by the one of the staff, Mario Gonzalez who states: ” A warm environment to escape the buzzing of the city.”. Whilst another regular customer Suzaanna Fiesca comments: “A cozy welcome from the staff always brings me back to this cafe.”

The cafe has established its place in the hearts of people in the local area who can no longer imagine Leyton without it. The bright blue architecture may bring warmth to the cafe but it is the people under them which bring it to life.
