Leyton Orient’s Wellens relishing Stevenage summit meeting

Leyton Orient head coach Richie Wellens is looking forward to their top of the table clash with Stevenage, after moving seven points clear at the League Two summit.

Wellens saw his side claim a 2-0 win over Sutton United at the weekend, in one of only two fixtures in the division to survive the wintry conditions.

And they welcome Stevenage to Brisbane Road on Tuesday, with their 12.30pm kick-off being broadcast live on Sky Sports.

“Big game, top versus second, but we don’t change, we just go on and continue being professional. We’ll come in Monday and keep working,” said Wellens.

Having used a heated dome to help ensure their pitch would be playable on Saturday, O’s went closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half when Theo Archibald’s free-kick came back off the crossbar.

They opened the scoring just past the hour mark, though, when Paul Smyth arrowed a shot into the top corner from 20 yards and an own goal from Alastair Smith on 79 minutes secured the points.

It meant a fourth successive league win, stretched over a five-week period, since defeat at Wimbledon and Wellens added: “It was important. We’d played once in a month previous to this and Bradford and it can have an affect, players can lose that little bit.

“I’ll put that down to the first 20 minutes, if you haven’t got that cleverness and sharpness in our minds, everybody thinks when it’s fitness, it’s just your body, it’s not.

“If your body gets really fit then your mind sharpens up as well.

“I didn’t think we were sharp in our mind but as the game went on and we got those extra minutes I think we became sharper.”

Sutton failed to seriously test the O’s defence as the table-toppers managed the game well.

And Wellens was pleased to see that element of control in their play.

“Have we conceded a shot on our goal? Against a side they put it in there,” he said.

“They make it difficult, but Vigouroux has not had a save to make.

“Even though it probably looks comfortable, they played their part in the game.

“You know if you switch off or get your game management right, the ball is going in the box to the strikers, two big lads, and they can cause you a threat.”
