Lewis Hamilton ‘never hooked up’ with Toto Wolff as he gives update on new deal
Lewis Hamilton has admitted that crunch talks with Toto Wolff set for after the Spanish Grand Prix didn’t go ahead as his contract speculation continues. Hamilton has yet to sign a new deal with just months remaining on his existing contract at the Silver Arrows.
In Spain, Hamilton hinted that he and Wolff were set to sit down for talks on the Monday after the race. However he has now revealed no meeting was held in what could be a major blow to getting a contract secured.
The seven-time champion did confirm that some progress had been made but there were no further updates on his future. F1 press conference interviewer Tom Clarkson asked: “You did say in Barcelona that you we hoping to hook up with Toto Wolff after the race to talk about your future with the team.
Hamilton interrupted: “We never hooked up. No we never hooked up.”
Clarkson added: “Pizza?” Hamilton replied: “No, we never had pizza. I’ve seen Toto and we talked several times. We have a great relationship so there is nothing else to say at the moment.”
When asked if they had made any progress, Hamilton added: “Yeah but nothing else new to really add.” Hamilton has continued to pledge his allegiance to the German marque despite speculation he could walk away from a rival.
He has been linked with a move to Ferrari with The Mail reporting that a £140million bid could be on the table. In Barcelona, Hamilton teased the talks but stressed they were nothing more than a regular update.
He explained: “I haven’t signed anything yet, but I think we are meeting with Toto tomorrow [Monday] so hopefully we can get something done. It wasn’t a subtle hint. We’ve had so many meetings and this is just another one of the meetings we are having.”
Wolff has continued to state that Hamilton will be driving for Mercedes next season despite nothing being formally agreed. Ahead of last weekend’s race, Wolff suggested a new deal could be struck within one conversation.
He said: “We just need time to sit over a coffee. That’s going to take half an hour.”
