Lewis Hamilton highlights key passion away from F1 that helps in Max Verstappen battle

Lewis Hamilton has pinpointed a key aspect of his life that keeps him fresh and engaged in his battle with Max Verstappen, as the seven-time world champion uses his keen interest in fashion to “separate him from the sport.”

Hamilton is currently involved in one of his toughest championship battles at Mercedes with Red Bull and Max Verstappen.

Though he currently leads the way in the championship standings, the intensity of the battle sees just two points separating the two heading into the Turkish Grand Prix.

After the Italian Grand Prix, Hamilton flew to New York to attend the Met Gala, highlighting emerging black designers, and has recently returned from Paris and England for Fashion week.

Yet Hamilton, who has seven world titles to his name already, says he uses his interest in fashion as an escape from the intensity.

Speaking on Thursday ahead of the Turkish Grand Prix, the 36-year-old said: “I love the fashion scene, I think I went there a long time ago to my first fashion show.

“I think it’s a much different world naturally to Formula One, F1 is obviously not focused on that.

“It’s obviously very corporate and there is no fashion, actually in Formula One. I always felt like it was a place where it wasn’t easy to be yourself.

“And when I went to a fashion show when you’re in the fashion week for example, you’re surrounded by people from all different walks of life, expressing themselves in different ways and I love that environment where I’m able to be able to express myself.

Wearing a kilt in the press conference, Hamilton added: “I now do that on the racetrack. And I feel free to be able to do so.

“I only went to one fashion show, I didn’t go to anywhere near as many as I have done in the past.

“I love being able to separate from the sport, the intensity of this whole season is as difficult for everyone that’s at the track, and so to be able to have something else, another outlet.

“Something else that you can focus on helps take the weight off it.

“And so when I come back, it always feels fresh when it comes to going free because it’s not something I’ve been thinking about every single day.

Hamilton is looking to overtake Michael Schumacher this season by winning an unprecedented eighth world title.

But Hamilton admitted experience from past battles has helped him find outlets to ground him.

“I generally find it relatively easy [to relax] because I said, I have these other outlets that I’m able to blow off steam in lots of different ways.

“The most important thing is always to be able to come back into the racing environment, fresh, recovered, positive, and not really have any worries.

“I’m able to arrive and just love doing my job. So we just take it one week at a time, or one race at a time.

“Just always trying to elevate, spend plenty of time speaking to the team about how we can advance and improve.

“But I’ve been doing this a long time so I found ways personally, it worked well for me, won’t work for everyone, but I found the way that I know what gets me on course and what can put me off course, and so, stick to them.”
