Lemar talks ‘painful’ transformation for Bridgerton role as appearance wows fans
During an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk in the midst of his tour for his latest album, Page In My Heart, Lemar, 45, shed light on his unexpected appearance in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.
The singer left fans taken aback when he was cast in a cameo role as Lord Smythe-Smith on the Netflix series.
Speaking about working on the period drama, Lemar revealed the one drawback was the costume he had to wear.
He divulged: “[The costume was] very stiff! It was the shoes, the shoes are like ouch, wow!
“I think the ladies had the better draw of the straw, because they just look amazing in their gowns.

“The guys, I mean, the end result is alright, but very painful to walk around in.”
Lemar went on to empathise with the main cast of the show, who have to dance in the shoes for long periods of the day.
He added: “Like, obviously, my thing was just a guest appearance. But if I was in the main cast, and had to dance all day, that must be… ooff!”(sic)
Despite the uncomfortable shoes, Lemar had fun getting into character “because you look in the mirror and you’re like that’s not me! So it does kind of like assist in that process”.
The Fame Academy alum also had a voice coach to help him embrace the regency-era pronunciation of certain words.
Discussing his move into acting, Lemar told Express.co.uk: “Acting is something that I’ve always wanted to try out.
“But I’ve always been a bit nervous because I respect art and people’s craft, I don’t want them to feel that, because I’m doing music then you just go and do acting. So I wanted to give it a bit of time.
“I did something with Sky Cinema last year called Little Darlings with Jamelia, that was really, really cool.
“So there’s something else coming out this year on BBC that I make a cameo in as well.
“I wasn’t allowed to talk about Bridgerton at all. But now it’s out, that’s good, I’d love to do more of that, the experience was really, really cool.”
Lemar admitted he was a bit worried his cameo may have been “edited out”, as the storyline could have changed in the aftermath of him filming his scene.
The Future Love hitmaker shared: “What they do is amazing with the whole Shondaland production, Tom Verica is an exceptional director as well.
“But you are kind of thinking, did they edit me out? Because the story might change!
“But luckily for me, I was in it, I loved the character. It was nice to do something that’s not obvious, you know?
“I think when I did Little Darlings, it was great, but my role was a musician, and a family man, which are two things I can relate to, whereas this is a period drama, so it was nice to try different outfits on and a different accent.”
Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte are both available on Netflix.
Lemar’s latest album Page In My Heart is available to stream now on Apple Music and Spotify.
