Leafs’ Mitch Marner unveils ‘Miami Vice’ custom skates for NHL all-star weekend
The Maple Leafs’ only all-star unveiled custom skates at practice on Tuesday ahead of this weekend’s festivities.
Mitch Marner donned his new “Miami Vice” style skates — an ode to Florida, the host of this year’s NHL All-Star Game — as the Leafs prepared for Wednesday’s home matchup against the Bruins.
The white skates featured pink and blue accents in reference to the hit TV show, along with different designs on each boot.
The left skate had a picture of Marner’s dog Zeus riding a shark on one side and this year’s all-star logo on the other. The right skate showed Zeus riding an alligator and the retro-style Eastern Conference logo. On the back of both skates is the logo of the Marner Assist Foundation, the Leafs winger’s charity which aims to provide assistance in the areas of children’s social care, health and education.
While Marner said he got plenty of attention from his teammates during practice, he plans to auction the skates off through his charity, and may have other designs to unveil as the season wears on.
Marner will be Toronto’s only representative at all-star weekend after Auston Matthews was injured last week and was forced to withdraw, while William Nylander, despite his career-best season, did not make the team.
The skills competition will take place on Feb. 3 with the game following on Feb. 4.
