Lea Michele ready to steal ‘Funny Girl’ spotlight in show rehearsal
Lea Michele is tapping into her upcoming role as Fanny Brice in Broadway’s “Funny Girl.”
The 35-year-old multitalented songstress posted a glimpse of her tap dancing rehearsals to her Instagram story alongside the show’s choreographers, Ayodele Casel and Dre Torres.
In the clip, the “Glee” alum — donning a black sports bra, leggings and tap shoes — spins her way into a military salute milliseconds ahead of Casel and Torres. Overjoyed that she stuck the ending pose, all three ladies clap as Michele high fives Casel.
“The great honor of having these two geniuses teach me how to tap for @funnygirl has been so unbelievably incredible and inspiring,” she wrote on a photo with the professionals.
Shortly after the black-and-white, behind-the-scenes footage, Michele returned home to her nearly 2-year-old son, Ever, whom she shares with her husband Zandy Reich.
“Home from work and back to mom duty,” she captioned a photo of Ever playing in a kiddie pool in New York City.
Come Sept. 6, Michele will fulfill her longtime dream of starring as Barbra Streisand’s original character in “Funny Girl.” Her role comes as the former Fanny, Beanie Feldstein, exited the show early after a rough go-around.
“Once the production decided to take the show in a different direction, I made the extremely difficult decision to step away sooner than anticipated,” Feldstein, 29, wrote in a controversial Twitter post that “Funny Girl” producers may or may not have known was coming.
But audiences don’t seem too sad to see her go. Ticket prices for Michele’s debut show range from $450 all the way to an astounding $2,350 — plus a $470 fee — on SeatGeek. Comparatively, tickets for the Sept. 5 show starring understudy Julie Benko are available for $69.
Fellow “Glee” alum Jane Lynch will also leave her role as Fanny’s mother on Sept. 6 and be replaced by Broadway star Tovah Feldshuh.
On July 13, Michele honored her former boyfriend and “Glee” co-star Cory Monteith on the ninth anniversary of his death. The onetime couple, who started dating in 2012, were together until Monteith, then 31, died of a heroin overdose on July 13, 2013.
