Laughing matters: Giggles guaranteed with the pick of this week’s comedy
An evening of fun and laughter wouldn’t go a miss right now.
Ashley Davies takes her pick of the week’s comedy that will trigger some belly laughs and chortles, including at venues in Leicester, London and of course nationwide.
From Vittorio Angeloni who is Belfast stand-up was something of a breakthrough act at last year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe to Eshaan Ekbar who has appeared on TV shows from Mock The Week and QI to Frankie Boyle’s New World Order, and doing voices for Spitting Image.
Let’s take a look at who you can catch this week.
1. Vittorio Angeloni – Translations
This Belfast stand-up was something of a breakthrough act at last year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and was nominated for best newcomer at Dave’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards. Even though he’s had to add extra dates to this tour, it’s selling out fast, so get your skates on if you want to see what all the fuss is about.
And if you’ve already seen Translations and are hungry for what’s next, he’s doing a work-in-progress of his next show, Who Do You Think You Are? I Am!, at the Leicester Comedy Festival on Feb 23.
Touring until May 21, nationwide.
2. Lara Ricote – GRL/LATNX/DEF
Lara was best newcomer at last year’s Dave’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards, and this show is an absolute dream. As the hard-of-hearing daughter of Venezuelan and Mexican parents, she’s interested in talking about her intersectional identity, and how she hadn’t realised until recently that she’s considered a minority in so many ways – albeit one who ‘passes’. So adorably silly is she that you almost don’t notice the serious bass note about climate change.
Until Feb 4, Soho Theatre, London.
3. Alex Kealy – Winner Takes All
If you like learning as much as you enjoy laughing, you’re going to love this show. One of the smartest young comics in the UK, Alex’s latest show is largely about big tech and the unhealthy amount of control wielded by a small number of Silicon Valley companies. He’s often on BBC Radio’s The Now Show, and he’s got a podcast coming up called Gig Pigs, in which he and Ivo Graham get another comedian to go to a live music gig and share their verdict. Check out his Twitter (@alexkealy) for how funny he is.
Touring Mon-Apr 27, nationwide.
4. Eshaan Akbar – Pretender
Eshaan has some cracking television credentials, having appeared on everything from Mock The Week and QI to Frankie Boyle’s New World Order, and doing voices for Spitting Image. He also hosts the But Where Are You Really From? podcast on BBC Sounds and Panic Room on Audible. Fresh from supporting Micky Flanagan on tour, he’s now embarking upon a big one of his own, and it’ll all be very relatable if you’ve ever suffered from imposter syndrome.
Touring until Apr 30, nationwide.
5. Catherine Cohen – Come For Me
She won best newcomer at 2019’s Dave’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards and her on-screen credits include season three of What We Do In The Shadows, Broad City and Search Party. This musical show is all about entering your 30s as a woman online, being in love and inspired to romanticise the idea of freezing your eggs. Expect a strong shot of knowing solipsism.
6. Alex Edelman – Just For Us
American Alex is a class act. As well as talking about his bodybuilder brother (the first Orthodox Jew to compete in the Winter Olympics) and some other great stories, he tells the gripping tale of how he infiltrated a white nationalist group in New York City after receiving antisemitic abuse online.
Until Feb 26, Menier Chocolate Factory, London.
