A MYSTERIOUS Land Rover has been discovered submerged in a canal with the owner nowhere to be seen.

Locals were left in shock after discovering the car floating on its side half underwater.

The Land Rover Discovery 4 worth around £40,000 was found in New Main Line Canal in Tipton, West Midlands last Sunday.

Police don’t know how the car ended up in the lock, but it has now been confirmed the car was reported stolen in Staffordshire.

Witnesses said broken glass could be seen around the lock and a small amount of fuel was leaking into the water.

The Canal & River Trust said a crane was used to lift the Land Rover out, costing them £5,000.

Speaking to the local newspaper Stoke on Trent Live, a Canal & River Trust spokesperson said: ” We were alerted that a Land Rover car had been driven into Factory Lock number 3 on the Main Line Canal in Tipton.

“Thankfully, there are no reports of anyone being injured, and we are working on plans to crane the car out of the canal.

“Following a site visit scheduled for today, we are hoping the car will be removed.”

The Canal & River Trust confirmed that the vehicle was safely removed from the canal with minimal damage to the lock and environment.

West Midlands Police said: “We were called to Factory Road in Tipton shortly before 6 am following reports a vehicle had driven into a canal.

“Our colleagues from the fire service also attended and following checks of the vehicle and the lock no one was found.

“The vehicle was believed to be stolen from the Staffordshire area.”
