Kyrgios tees off in Djokovic video message

Nick Kyrgios says he feels “embarrassed” to be an Australian athlete given the way the Novak Djokovic saga has been handled ansd reported.

Kyrgios, who is facing a race against the clock to be fit for next week’s Australian Open after testing positive for COVID-19, posted an update on his condition on Instagram – as well as some typically forthright views on Djokovic, who is currently free to stay in Australia and compete, pending further action from Australia’s Minister for Immigration Alex Hawke.

“We know that the media like to create s–tstorms, with my story and everything going on with Novak,” Kyrgios said.

“I feel quite embarrassed as an Australian athlete that’s seen what this guy has done for us and for the sport. I just don’t think it’s right how we’re handling it but the media loves to do that, loves to divide.”

Kyrgios withdrew from this week’s Sydney Tennis Classic after testing positive but is still hopeful of competing at his home Grand Slam.

“I actually don’t feel too bad at the moment and I’m taking all necessary precautions.

“Obviously not ideal a week out of the Aus Open but I’m going to do everything in my power to feel OK and get out there and hopefully give you all a show. I just don’t want this to take away from the Australian summer of tennis. We’ve had a lot of great results, a lot of other Aussies are doing really well.”
