Kyrgios return from ‘quite serious’ surgery confirmed

Aussie tennis firebrand Nick Kyrgios is just hours away from a long-awaited return to the court.

Last year’s Wimbledon finalist, Kyrgios will make his return at the Stuttgart Open in the early hours of Wednesday morning against Wu Yibing.

Kyrgios has not played an official competitive match since November, and a singles match since October.

After a last-minute withdrawal from the Australian Open in January, Kyrgios underwent surgery on a meniscus tear on his left knee.

“I wouldn’t say it was major surgery, but I had quite a serious surgery on my knee,” Kyrgios said.

“It’s taken me about five months to get back to even playing, moving and (ready to play) against these players.”

Kyrgios admitted while the time off was difficult, but he was able to enjoy spending time at home with his family.

“It’s been difficult, but at times it’s been amazing just to be home with my family. Tennis is a sport where you travel so much of the year, and being home was important,” he said.

“Seeing everyone (else) play wasn’t easy, at times. I’m just super excited that my knee is a bit better and I’m able to play now.”

A semi-final walkover of Rafael Nadal saw Kyrgios meet Novak Djokovic in last year’s Wimbledon final. He was downed in four sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

It was at the All-England Club in 2014 that Kyrgios shot to stardom, beating Nadal on his way to a quarterfinals appearance in his first Wimbledon.

Kyrgios said grass remains his strongest surface.

“The grass season for me is always the best part of the year,” he said.

“This year has been really tough for me, obviously recovering from knee surgery. I’m coming back at a tournament (where) I’ve done really well in the past, played some amazing matches.

“I’m super excited to be here again and to get out there and play.”
