Kyrgios gobsmacked by question after crushing ‘drunk out of her mind’ Wimbledon fan

After an almost perfect opening set, Nick Kyrgios lost the plot after taking issue with his team and a fan he accused of having “700 drinks”.

The Wimbledon crowd was treated to the full Nick Kyrgios experience in the 2022 men’s final – but unfortunately for the Aussie there was more bad than good as he threw away a chance at tennis immortality.

After an almost-perfect first set of tennis saw his dreams of hoisting the Wimbledon trophy soar, the Aussie became a frustrated, distracted mess in the second and third sets.

He kept battling to force a fourth set tiebreaker before coming apart at the seams as Novak Djokovic won his 21st grand slam 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6.

Kyrgios looked more than Djokovic could handle in the first set but ended up being another vanquished foe as the Serb seized his seventh Wimbledon title.

“He’s a bit of a god, I’m not going to lie. I thought I played well,” Kyrgios said on-court after receiving the runner-up plate.

Asked if the run to the final had made him hungry to do it again, Kyrgios said: “Absolutely not, I’m so tired. Me, my team, I think we’re all exhausted … Maybe one day I’ll be here again, but I don’t know about that.”

But in a nice moment, Djokovic then stepped up to speak and declared: “Nick, you’ll be back.”

Kyrgios again appeared to shoot himself in the foot by becoming distracted by people in the crowd. He regularly yelled at his own team and asked for a female fan – who accused of being “drunk out of her mind” – to be ejected.

Kyrgios was asked about the rowdy spectator in his post-match press conference, saying she was repeatedly speaking to him between points and adding “that’s when you’ve maybe got to give her a water or take her out”.

A reporter added: “You might find this interesting but since she’s said that she had two drinks and she was actually rooting for you from the start. What do you make of that?”

A gobsmacked Kyrgios replied: “That doesn’t make it OK to start talking to Nick Kyrgios, who’s playing a final of Wimbledon, middle of the point. Why are you trying to make that OK? What?”

‘Superb p*** taking’ in astonishing first set

If Kyrgios does nothing else in his tennis career he will always be able to look back on the first set of the 2022 Wimbledon final and smile.

The Aussie produced one of the most astonishing displays of tennis ever seen on centre court to rip the opener away from Djokovic. And oh did he do it in style.

Second serve aces, underarm serves, tweeners, a shot where he swapped the racket from his right to left hand – Kyrgios showed off his full bag of tricks to leave the crowd stunned.

Djokovic was shell-shocked. The Serb double faulted to cough up the crucial break in the fifth game and then was a participant as Kyrgios rained bomb after bomb down upon him.

There were several games where the best returner in men’s tennis history was unable to even win a single point, so good was Kyrgios’ precision, power and variety.

The stage seemed set for Kyrgios to become the first Aussie male to win a grand slam since Lleyton Hewitt in 2002.

‘Say something!’: Kyrgios loses plot in second set

Djokovic fought back from losing the first two sets in his quarterfinal and the first set in his semi so it was no surprise to see him break early in the second set.

Kyrgios had shown his first signs of agitation at the change of ends after the third game, chirping at his player box to question why he was having to ask them to support him.

He followed that complaint by playing an ordinary game to fall behind 3-1 as Djokovic looked to even the match.

Kyrgios was still making inroads on the Djokovic serve, but couldn’t quite get as far as a break point as the second set began to slip away at 5-2.

But all of a sudden he had three of them.

The Canberra native brought the crowd to their feet by chasing down a Djokovic drop shot and angling a winner across the net as he found himself with three break points at 0-40.

But he blew all three – and a fourth after the game went to deuce – as unforced errors took their toll.

Kyrgios reached boiling point with his team, standing and shouting at them after every point as Djokovic levelled the match.

“Say something!” he roared. “It’s 0-40. God damn! It’s 0-40!”

‘Drunk out of her mind’: Outbursts continue in third set

The outbursts continued in the third set as Kyrgios asked for a spectator to be kicked out of the stands after holding serve in the fifth game.

The Aussie told the chair umpire a female fan had yelled out twice in between his first and second serves.

“Distracting me when I’m serving in a Wimbledon final,” Kyrgios pleaded. “There’s not a bigger occasion. You didn’t believe me. And she did it again. It nearly cost me the game.

“Why is she still here? She’s drunk out of her mind in the first row, speaking to me in the middle of a game. What’s acceptable? Nothing is acceptable? So kick her out!”

He was asked to point her out.

“I know exactly which one it is,” Kyrgios told the chair umpire. “It’s the one who looks like she’s had about 700 drinks, bro.”

The trainwreck continued in the ninth game as Kyrgios blew a 40-0 advantage to give up serve. He double faulted at deuce before hitting a backhand halfway up the net to gift the Serb a 5-4 lead.

It led to another explosion at his team for their apparent failure to keep supporting him appropriately.

“Why do you stop? 40-0, 40-15 and you just relax! Why?” he shouted at them.

Djokovic wasn’t exactly in peak form on the other side of the net but held his cool to serve out the set.

Match tightens in fourth set

Kyrgios kept fighting as he looked to extend the match but Djokovic began raising his game to a new level.

The Serb had just one unforced error in the first eight games of the fourth set to give Kyrgios no chance of a break.

The Aussie kept doing enough on serve to force a tiebreaker but hit error after error to cough up the match.
