Kraven The Hunter new trailer teases Spider-Man but also leaves Marvel fans divided on the dispersal from the source

Sony Pictures Entertainment has just released the first trailer of the upcoming movie, Kraven the Hunter, based on the Marvel supervillain. The approximately 3-minute-long trailer presented the first look at Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s second MCU outing, after playing Quicksilver in Avenger: Age of Ultron. The netizens have spoken and while many appreciate the casting, some others are criticizing the change in the origin story of one of Spider-Man’s most menacing villains. Here’s more.

Kraven the Hunter movie changed the supervillain’s origin story and gave him powers

While many seem impressed with the look that Aaron Taylor-Johnson carries in the trailer, being very close to that from the comics, we also see Kraven the Hunter with powers. Originally, Kraven the Hunter does not have innate powers in the comics. He rather derives them from a potion that he ingests from time to time. In the trailer, we see some kind of blood transfusion that he accidentally undergoes with that of a lion when he’s out hunting with his father, portrayed by Russel Crowe. This is what grants him his powers, which lets him develop a connection with animals, making him a better hunter. Turns out, fans stand divided with this adaptation.

Some have even criticised how Sony is coming up with villain movies where they titular characters aren’t exactly the villain. Anti-hero would be a better word to describe these characters, and Venom, Morbius, and now Kraven The Hunter are cases on point.

Not to mention the similarity of the storyline with the origin story of the DC supervillain, Catman. In the trailer, we hear Russel Crowe saying “He’s weak, like his mother”. The dialogue is interspersed with the lion hunting scene, that probably ends with Kraven gaining his powers. The DC comics too have a similar storyline for Catman, where Thomas Blake’s father says “just like you mom” when he is unable to shoot the lion.

Given that these movies form a part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe, which is expected to crossover with Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man at some point, these portrayals apparently make it more unlikely.

The Spider-Man tease

The new trailer of Kraven the Hunter seems to have teased the Spider-Man connection this Marvel supervillain has. In a scene that lasts for less than two seconds, we see Kraven on the ground in the woods, looking scared as multiple spiders are scurrying above him.

Kraven The Hunter releases in theatres this October 6, 2023.
