Today, Saturday August 21 2021, British-Canadian actress Kim Catrall turns 65-years-old. The Hollywood icon is perhaps best known for appearing in the Sex and the City series as Samantha Jones, however she has also worked in a number of films over the years. In the 1980s she hit cult status after appearing in the Andrew McCarthy-led romance movie Mannequin. A year before that film’s release, however, she played Gracie Law.
Cattrall played Gracie in John Carpenter’s cult hit movie Big Trouble in Little China.
She worked alongside Kurt Russell in the thrilling fantasy movie, where she fought against the forces of evil in San Francisco’s Chinatown.
At the time Russell was on a stint of working alongside Carpenter, following his performances in Elvis, Escape from New York and The Thing. This was the first time Cattrall worked with Carpenter.
Big Trouble in Little China had a fairly substantial budget of $19-25 million – but it was a box office flop, earning just $11.1 million.
Years later Cattrall revealed she was working around the clock to perform on stage.

Cattrall said in 2013 she was leaving the set of Big Trouble in Little China at 4:30pm each day to perform Three Sisters at a local theatre.
She added that she had to explain to her studio bosses who Anton Chekhov was.
The star said: “My film career subsidised my theatre career.
“If I only did theatre I would have had to waitress… and I didn’t want to waitress.” (Via Metro)
Cattrall’s work ethic no doubt comes from her parents, who came from humble beginnings in Liverpool where she was born – before moving to Canada.
Speaking in 2019, Cattrall recalled: “My parents were a huge influence on the person I’ve become. Mum was a secretary and dad was a construction engineer. They were scousers, real grafters and emigrated to Canada when I was a baby.
“Dad was always telling me: ‘You can do anything.’ So I grew up thinking that if he believed in me, I could do whatever I put my mind to.” (Via The Guardian)
The actor became a Hollywood heartthrob throughout the 1980s on the silver screen, but she was also felt some pressure to do well for the sake of her mother and grandmother.

Cattrall said in the same interview: “My mother’s childhood was shocking and dramatic. Her father abandoned my grandmother, leaving her in terrible poverty, struggling to bring up three children.
“As I’ve got older that’s inspired me to want to tell stories about real women who are not Superwoman but need extraordinary powers to survive, like my grandmother.”
The impassioned actress candidly revealed: “The tragedies in my life continue to shape me.
“Now I don’t want to be in a situation for even an hour where I’m not enjoying myself. I want to choose who I spend time with personally and professionally. It’s my life.
“I lost my dad seven years ago, to Alzheimer’s, and Mum has just turned 90. I’ve become aware there’s only so much time left.”
Despite her humble beginnings, Cattrall has rubbed shoulders with some elite members of society.
She confessed: “I was mistaken for [Canadian Prime Minister] Justin Trudeau’s mother on 60 Minutes when they flashed up my picture instead of hers.
“I dated his father briefly way back. Weeks later Justin introduced me to his mum at an event and said: ‘Meet my mother, Kim Cattrall!'”
