Kevin Spacey arrives at court as opening arguments begin in assault trial
The Oscar-winning actor has denied 12 charges of sex offences, including sexual assault and indecent assault, against four men.
A jury panel of 14 – made up of nine men and three women – were sworn in on Wednesday with Spacey in attendance at Southwark Crown Court in London.
On Friday morning, the 63-year-old actor was spotted arriving at the courthouse in a black taxi dressed smart in a grey suit and yellow tie. He flashed a smile at the group of photographers assembled outside before heading into the building with his legal team.
Christine Agnew KC for the prosecution is due to tell jurors about alleged offences between 2001 and 2013.
In January, Spacey pleaded not guilty to three counts of indecent assault, three counts of sexual assault and one count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent.
Before the jury panel was selected for the trial earlier in the week, Mr Justice Mark Wall told prospective jurors: ‘I am sure the defendant will be gratified to know that many of you will know his name or have seen his films,’ referring to Spacey’s stellar acting career.
The judge added that the case has ‘quite obviously’ attracted a lot of media attention, but that they ‘must avoid this coverage where you can’.
In a preliminary court hearing in June, Spacey’s lawyer, Patrick Gibbs KC, said his client ‘strenuously denies any and all criminality in this case’.
Spacey is best known for starring in a string of blockbuster movies including Superman Returns, Horrible Bosses and Pay It Forward.
He has earned two Oscars, the first for his supporting role in The Usual Suspects and then receiving the best actor award for his lead performance in American Beauty.
