Kevin Campbell compares Takehiro Tomiyasu to two Arsenal legends
Kevin Campbell has drawn comparisons between Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu and club legends Lee Dixon and Lauren.
Tomiyasu joined the Gunners on deadline day in the summer transfer window from Italian club Bologna for a fee in the region of £17m.
Since his arrival, the Japan international has been a mainstay in Mikel Arteta’s side and has played 16 of the club’s last 17 Premier League matches.
Arsenal started the top flight season with three straight defeats, but have since suffered just four losses in their next 17 matches after Mikel Arteta handed league debuts to Tomiyasu and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale against Norwich on matchday four.
And Campbell has been impressed with the 23-year-old right-back so far this season, adding that he believes he has a ‘different spice’ to former Arsenal defenders Dixon and Lauren.
‘I think his toughness and his relentless nature is how Lee Dixon used to play and he’s a bit like Lauren, Lauren was tough, he could play and he was tough,’ he told Highbury Squad Youtube channel.
‘Tomiyasu has a bit of different spice to him as well, because aerially, he’s dominant.
‘We hit him sometimes at goal kicks because he’s aerially dominant. At that back-stick where we’ve had so many problems in the past, we don’t seem to have those problems anymore. I think he’s quite a lot of people’s favourite player.’
Arsenal will be looking to continue their fine form when they take of Championship club Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Sunday, before an important Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool at Anfield next Thursday.
