Days before she aims to propel Chelsea to a fourth consecutive Women’s Super League title in England, which would lead to another FA Cup-WSL double, Sam Kerr has become the first woman to win the England Football Writers’ Association’s Footballer of the Year trophy in two straight seasons.
Chelsea needs to beat bottom-placed Reading on the final day of the season this weekend to seal the title again. A draw is also likely to be enough for the Blues, who sit two points above Manchester United, with a five goal buffer if it comes down to goal difference.
No woman has previously been awarded the honour two years in a row in its short history. Among the men, Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo are the only two to have done so in 75 years.

Under two months away from the women’s World Cup to be hosted on home soil, the Matildas’ record-breaking star said winning her domestic competition is at the forefront of her mind for now.
“Anyone that’s involved in football knows how hard it is to come back year after year and to stay at the top. So we’re doing everything to win on Saturday,” she said.
Kerr has had another triumphant season, netting 28 goals in all competitions, most notably the winner in Chelsea’s 1-0 FA Cup final triumph over Manchester United earlier in the month.
“It’s amazing. It’s something that I’m very proud of,” Kerr said.
“Off the back of the Euros, women’s football has grown a lot. Walking down the street, the crowds are bigger, everything’s just increased over the last year.”
