Keown responds to Rio Ferdinand over Man United man of the match criticism

Martin Keown has defended his decision to pick Diogo Dalot as man of the match in the win over Brentford amid criticism from BT Sports pundits Rio Ferdinand and Steve Sidwell.

The former Arsenal captain was on co-commentary duty during the 3-0 win over the Bees and opted for the Portuguese full-back to the dismay of the pundits who felt Scott McTominay deserved the award for his midfield display.

McTominay was dominant in the middle of the pitch for the Reds as he cut out dangerous Brentford attacks and sparked opportunities for the visitors with bursting runs forward.

But Keown justified his choice and fired at the duo insisting “they’re not choosing man of the match, I am,”

“I did get a message, yeah. It was thrown at us last minute and there was a feeling towards McTominay,” he told talkSPORT.

“I thought Dalot did really well in the game. He deserved that pat on the back.

“There was a barrage of balls to that back post and he dealt with them comfortably. When you go to Brentford, you know what you’re up against.

“He showed really good pace, he surprised me. It has been a long time coming.

“McTominay, of course he had a decent game, but I just thought it would be better for the confidence of Dalot to give him man of the match.”

“A message came through in my speaker, about what they thought in the studio and I just thought, ‘They’re not choosing man of the match, I am’.”
