Kell Brook and Amir Khan respond to retirement talk after action-packed fight
Amir Khan is leaning towards retirement after his bruising defeat to Kell Brook on Saturday night, while the victor is eyeing up another huge all-British fight.
Brook dominated the contest between the old rivals in a clash that has been in the making for nearly two decades.
Khan was hurt in the very first round and gamely fought on, having moments but regularly being hurt, before the referee stepped in during the sixth to put an end to the punishment.
A badly marked up Khan was complimentary to his foe after the fight, but looked and sounded like a man who was ready to hang up the gloves for good.
’40 fights, it’s a lot of fights. Winning two world title. Fighting over in America and around the world…I need to sit down with my family but I think it is more towards the end of my career now,’ Khan told Sky Sports.
‘Obviously that love of the sport is not there anymore, like it was before. When I was in the ring I used to have that excitement and that push and I didn’t have that in me, I felt quite flat.
‘I think that might be a sign for me to call it a day, but let’s see. I’m going to go back and watch the video.
‘Kell came trained, he looked really, really good today and he was ready. It’s very hard to beat a guy who just wants to win.’
Brook did not confirm his next move, but was clearly on a high after the massive win, and while he acknowledged that he could retire content, he sounded more likely to fight again, with Chris Eubank Jr in his sights.
‘I can walk away. Eubank, I don’t like Eubank, we could fight Eubank. There’s some big fights out there for me,’ he said.
‘If the millions are out, I’ll fight because I’m a prize fighter at the end of the day. I’ve got three beautiful daughters who want that money off me.’
On his career, Brook said: ‘It’s amazing, I’ve gone to America, beat Shawn Porter, got in with [Gennady] Golovkin, eye socket gone, [Errol] Spence, eye socket gone, [Terence] Crawford pound-for-pound.
‘I’ve just had the fight that I’ve wanted. I can live at peace with myself and I reckon I’ve had a fantastic career with Amir Khan on my record.
‘I’ll sit down with my immediate family and see if I can carry on. But I’ll be honest with you now, my mojo is back, I love this game.
‘We’ll have to wait and see, enjoy my family now, have a little bit of rest, but I’m back baby!’
