Kate Winslet details daughter’s ‘agony’ in tearful BAFTAs tribute

Kate Winslet, 47, was in floods of tears as she took to the stage to accept her Leading Actress Award at the 2023 TV BAFTA Awards.

The star struggled to read her acceptance speech due to the tears that had obscured her vision, but she did take time out to pay tribute to her daughter Mia Threapleton, 22.

The Titanic actress recalled the “agony” her daughter had been put through whilst filming scenes for I Am Ruth, which sees a mother and daughter work through emotional turmoil.

In the speech, an emotional Kate said: “(I am) guaranteed to be the one of the night to cry, I can’t see (my speech).”

She added that “small British television dramas can be mighty” and mental health stories such as this one “need to be heard”.

“To any young person long person listening please ask for help, It will be there just ask for it.”
