Today marks St Patrick’s Day, which means you’ll be seeing a lot of green, from the seas of people wearing the shade on the streets to the actual water in the Chicago River (which is filled with dye for the occasion).

And the Duchess of Cambridge is getting in on the action too, sporting a grassy hue as she joined the 1st Battalion Irish Guards for their annual St Patrick’s Day parade.

The event, at Mons Barracks in Aldershot, is something of a tradition for Kate and husband William, although they’ve had to miss out on festivities since 2019 due to coronavirus restrictions.

Kate – in another longstanding tradition for royal women – was tasked with presenting sprigs of shamrock to officers and guardsman, who then passed them along the ranks. Even the regimental mascot, an Irish Wolf Hound, got a good luck token.

Style-savvy Middleton stayed true to form in the fashion stakes too, wearing a forest green wool coat with a matching hat.

A fan of coat-dresses in the springtime shade, she has previously worn designs by Alexander McQueen, Erdem, and Beulah London.

Based on the standout dagger collar and tweed-like fabric, it appeared Kate had chosen a bespoke piece by Catherine Walker or Katherine Hooker, two British creators she’s favoured in the past whose work shows similar themes.

However, today’s outfit was revealed to be by Laura Green, a London-based designer specialising in contemporary couture.

Reminiscent of the formal tartan coats seen at Miu Miu in recent seasons, a belt and flared skirt keep the silhouette feminine. This is offset perfectly with military touches like epaulettes to balance the overall look.

Unfortunately, for most of us who aren’t in direct succession for the country’s throne, custom patterns and tailoring is out of reach.

The Emilia coat from Laura Green worn by the mother-of-three today comes in at £3,200, while bespoke pieces made in the Atelier can be even more.

Even if you don’t have a Buckingham Palace budget, though, you can still get in on the trend.

‘Wordle green’ is trending alongside the hit mobile puzzle game, and the high street is packed with jewel tones and earthier greens to suit your colouring.

When investing in something like a coat, you’ll naturally consider whether it can see you through seasons without looking dated. If you’re worried, look for a classic shape in a deep bottle green, keeping things versatile yet timeless.

Taking inspiration from Kate, you may also want to incorporate retro touches (like dagger collars or exaggerated shoulders) or military-style hardware.

Then there’s accessorising. Kate donned a gold shamrock brooch (one she’s worn at the annual event) and a woollen fascinator, which may be a little too dressy for everyday wear.

To make a formal coat like this work in a more casual setting, countryside staples like riding boots are ideal for daytime.

We’ve rounded up the best doppelgängers of the Duchess of Cambridge’s Laura Green frock coat, with options at a range of price points.
