Kate Middleton lent ‘flirtatious’ style trend from Princess Diana

The Duchess of Cambridge and Cornwall is known for her classic style, but there is one particular print which the royal ladies have used to add a bit of “fun” and “flirtatiousness” into their ensembles.

Miranda Holder is a fashion coach who is known for her viral TikTok style videos posted under the username @themirandaholder ‘Your Feel Good Fashion Coach. Speaking to Express.co.uk, she said: “Kate recently has had quite the polka dots moment.

“Obviously Princess Diana embraced them, and I think the thing with polka dots is they’re quite a fun print. The thing with polka dots is that they can vary so much, with the size of the dots etcetera, but it can just be reinvented every year with a different silhouette.

“I think [the print] makes Kate slightly more relatable. It brings a bit of personality and flirtatiousness to a look.”

Similarly, both royal women opted to wear polka dots not long after the birth of their children. In 1982, Diana was famously photographed alongside the then-Prince Charles outside of St Mary’s Hospital following the birth of her first son, prince William.

On the same steps as her mother-in-law, 31 years later, Kate chose a pale blue and white polka dot dress by British designer Jenny Packham to debut her firstborn son Prince George. The “fun” pattern is something the Duchess of Cambridge and Cornwall often opts for when with her children.

Miranda explained how Kate used the pattern to “soften” a sombre occasion in 2021.

She said: “At Prince Philip’s memorial, it was obviously a very austere, serious and sombre occasion but she had a very subtle polka dot print on her dress, which just softens the whole thing for her children. I think just brought a bit of levity and made her seem more human to all of us.”

The Duchess’ elegant look also gave a nod to a similar look worn by Princess Diana at Ascot in June 1988, when she wore a black polka dot dress with a large-brimmed hat, designed by Victor Edelstein and Philip Somerville respectively.

A brief history of the polka dot

The polka dot print has been around for centuries, though it first started out its life with negative connotations during the plague. It wasn’t until the 19th century when the spotty print became a hit after the dance craze ‘the polka dot’ took off. Polka dots became trendy both in fashion and on homewares.

However, polka dot as a fabric pattern wasn’t made possible until the mid-19th century when machines were able to produce evenly spaced dots.

The print made its way into the mainstream thanks to celebrities including Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and world-famous cartoon icon, Minnie Mouse, who was first seen in the 1920s wearing her much-loved spotted dress.
