Kate Middleton coronation look ‘didn’t do her any favours’

Kate, Princess of Wales’s Coronation gown has now been fully revealed – but one fashion expert believes the final result may be underwhelming.

The official portraits for the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla were released on Monday after Britain spent the weekend celebrating.

Kate’s dress was hidden at the crowning ceremony on Saturday due to the ceremonial robes she was wearing, but the official Coronation portrait of the Royal Family has shown the full details for the first time.

The Princess wore an ivory silk crepe gown by Alexander McQueen, with a high V neckline and silver bullion. The dress also featured floral embroidery of English roses, Scottish thistles, Irish shamrocks and Welsh daffodils to represent the four countries of Britain.

However, fashion expert Miranda Holder has said that while Kate looked “absolutely beautiful”, she was “a little bit underwhelmed” and “particularly devastated” by the final result.

Holder is an accomplished celebrity stylist who has worked for stars such as musician Boy George and actress Vanessa Williams.

On social media, Holder has become well-known for breaking down the latest news and hidden meaning behind royal fashion.

In a new video, she describes Kate’s Coronation dress as “quite plain”, while discussing why she believes the Princess was not as glamorous as she could have been.

Holder analysed the dress, noting: “You’ve got embroidery around a very pretty neckline, the cuffs and at the bottom. It’s cut beautifully, but I don’t think it’s that great.”

She also explained Kate’s dress was familiar to the black Alexander McQueen dress the Princess wore in 2019 to Queen Elizabeth’s Diplomatic Reception, where the late monarch welcomed diplomats to Buckingham Palace.

The expert said: “It’s actually exactly the same silhouette…which I also think is a little bit severe for Kate. It’s very classic and very beautiful, but I don’t think it does her any favours.”

Holder added “[Kate] looks beautiful, she would look beautiful in a bin bag” but said she didn’t know how she felt about the whole outfit.

“It’s by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, who of course designed Kate’s wedding gown so I really was expecting great things,” she said.

“The only thing I can think of is that they were keeping it deliberately paired back so as to not outshine the King and the Queen.”

She describes the dress as “acting as a sartorial vehicle” for the many pieces of Kate’s outfit at the Coronation, which included her ceremonial robes, her jewellery and the “beautiful” floral headpiece – meaning the dress was “not the main focal point”.

“Despite all this, we all agree that Kate looked absolutely beautiful, and I think the most beautiful she ever looked,” Holder added.
