The presenter had told ITV viewers on Thursday that Derek was back in hospital just days after meeting his idol, Elton John.
Kate and Derek were guests of honour Sir Elton’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour at London’s O2 Arena.
During the concert, the Tiny Dancer singer paid tribute to the couple, telling the crowd that they had endured “really tough times” before dedicating his 1975 hit, Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, to them.
He said, as reported by The Sun: “They’re inspiring. They’ve never given up and I’m so thrilled they’re here, I can’t believe they are here.
“I want to dedicate this song to the people I mentioned before, but especially to you guys.”
Derek is thought to be the UK’s worst-affected Covid survivor after contracting the virus in March 2020.
Derek spent more than a year in hospital during the early stage of the pandemic which left him fighting for his life and with life-long injuries.
