Kate Garraway was close to suffering an awkward wardrobe blunder on air, but thankfully changed just moments before Good Morning Britain began.

The 56-year-old, who was awarded an MBE earlier this week, joined Ben Shephard on Friday’s edition of the ITV daytime programme, but it didn’t kick off to a smooth start.

Ben began: ‘She just looked at me and she said, “Well, I’m just not sure my dress is done up and not sure I’m strapped in.’

She explained: ‘Well, the director Tom, I’m naming and shaming him, he made me go and change my dress 30 seconds before the show.’

She jokingly added that her MBE ‘wasn’t worth’ it, laughing: ‘I can’t even dress myself!’

‘The reason she had to change her dress was because it was strobing, so if you were looking at it first thing it would have made your eyes funny,’ Ben went on to explain.

‘It’s when the pattern on the dress shakes on the picture.’

Kate added: ‘Holly in wardrobe said it was a small price to play because it was a lovely dress.’

Ben joked: ‘And now we’ll never know! And now we’ve got the advantage of not being sure if things are done up and if you’re strapped in.

‘So who knows what could happen!’

‘Anything could happen!’ she agreed.

This comes after Kate revealed her husband Derek Draper ‘burst into tears’ of pride after she was officially made a Member of the Order of the British Empire at Windsor Castle.

During Thursday’s edition of the ITV programme, the TV personality explained what happened behind the scenes, saying: ‘Derek burst into tears’.

‘The lovely thing was Prince William said “how’s Derek?” and I said ‘here’s here!’ So we turned and saw and then obviously Derek was very tearful and then spoke about Jake [Derek’s carer] and gave Jake a wave as well.’

She continued: ‘Prince William said he wanted to go over but he’s not allowed to leave the rug. There’s a very fancy red and gold carpet that he stands on.

‘It was lovely at the castle there were so many people who wanted to shake Derek’s hand and say ‘my father, my husband my brother … what you’ve gone through has given us a lot of hope.

‘Because they are dealing with things from Covid but also other things like cancer which are difficult. So I think he got a huge amount from it as well, which was very very lovely.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
