Kao the Kangaroo is back, and he’s bringing the whole family

Family Affairs

This month sees the grand return of long-lost Dreamcast superstar Kao the Kangaroo, who is set to make a big comeback in a brand new sequel, passionately developed by indie developer/publisher Tate Multimedia… And, you know what? It’s really not looking too shabby at all.

The latest trailer for the retro-spirited 3D platform adventure introduces us to La Casa Kao, as we meet our hoppity-hero’s clan members. Aside from the fist-swing kanga himself, Kao the Kangaroo will also feature his father Walt, his mother Marlene, (known in social circles as “The Iron Lady”), and Kao’s best pal, the wily inventor Gadget. But where is Kao’s lovely sister? Well, that’s what we’re going to find out, as we guide Kao across the globe, utilizing his acrobatic abilities and knockout fighting skills to negotiate dangerous terrain and uncover the truth behind his sibling’s disappearance.

Kao the Kangaroo will see our old-school star come up against some of the world’s foremost warriors, using his father’s training and guidance to leave them all looking at the lights — crowning himself the greatest fighter on the planet. As I’ve noted before, this new sequel bears more than a passing resemblance to the latter-day Crash Bandicoot releases, but that’s fine. As long as Kao the Kangaroo equally captures the polished gameplay, fun characters, and creative worlds of its inspirations, then Tate Multimedia’s new title could prove to be one of the year’s most fun platforming adventures

Kao the Kangaroo launches May 27 on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
